Gas Bill

Gas Bill Calculator

Estimate your Sui gas bill before it arrives. Enter the units from your meter, or subtract your previous reading from your current one, and this calculator applies the same OGRA slab formula SNGPL and SSGC use for domestic bills, so you get a realistic rupee estimate, not a guess.

  • Works for both SNGPL and SSGC domestic bills, protected and non-protected
  • Uses the official OGRA slab rates, fixed charge, meter rent, and 18% GST
  • Shows the full breakdown, not just a final number, so you can see how it was calculated

A Sui gas bill is not billed at one flat rate. Pakistan's domestic gas tariff, set by OGRA, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, charges progressively higher rates as a household's monthly consumption climbs through eight slabs, on top of a fixed monthly charge, meter rent, and general sales tax. SNGPL and SSGC both bill on this same domestic slab structure, so the same formula applies whether your gas comes from the northern network or the southern one. This calculator runs that formula for you, using the consumption you enter, and shows every line of the estimate.

How the Gas Bill Calculator Works

Get an estimate in three steps, using either your units or a raw meter reading.

  1. 1

    Choose your category

Select protected or non-protected. Protected consumers are households whose average consumption over the last four winter months (November to February) stayed at or below 0.9 HM3; everyone else is non-protected. This is printed on your last bill.

  2. 2

Enter your units or meter reading

Type the units consumed this month directly, or switch to meter reading mode and enter your previous and current readings; the calculator subtracts them for you automatically.

  3. 3

    Read the breakdown

See the gas charges by slab, the fixed charge, meter rent, and GST added separately, then the estimated total at the bottom.

The Gas Bill Calculation Formula

SNGPL and SSGC calculate a domestic bill in the same four parts. Understanding each one is the difference between a rough guess and a number close to your real bill.

1. Gas charges, by slab

Your monthly units are converted to MMBTU, then billed progressively: the first slice at the first slab's rate, the next slice at the second slab's rate, and so on, up to the slab your total consumption reaches. This is called the previous-slab benefit; it means only your usage above each threshold moves to the higher rate, not your whole bill. It stops applying only for non-protected consumers above 4 HM3 a month, where the entire volume is billed at the top rate.

2. Fixed monthly charge

A flat charge billed every month regardless of usage: Rs 600 for protected consumers, and Rs 1,500 or Rs 3,000 for non-protected consumers depending on whether monthly usage is above 1.5 HM3.

3. Meter rent

A standard Rs 40 a month for a normal domestic meter, added on top of the fixed charge.

4. General Sales Tax

18% GST is applied to the gas charges, fixed charge, and meter rent combined, the same way it appears as a separate line on your official bill.

Worked example

A non-protected household uses 60 units (0.6 HM3) in a month. The first 25 units are billed at the Rs 500/MMBTU slab, and the remaining 35 units at the Rs 850/MMBTU slab. Add the Rs 1,500 fixed charge and Rs 40 meter rent, then 18% GST on the combined total, and you reach the estimated bill. The calculator above runs this exact sequence for any number you enter.

HM3, MMBTU, and GCV Explained

Three terms decide the rupee amount on a gas bill. None of them are units you choose; they describe how your raw meter reading becomes a billed quantity.

HM3 (hundred cubic metres)
The unit gas tariff slabs are defined in. Your meter measures cubic metres (CM, sometimes called SCM); 100 CM equals 1 HM3. A protected consumer's 0.9 HM3 monthly cap is 90 CM on the meter.
MMBTU (million British thermal units)
The unit gas is actually priced in, since gas from different fields burns slightly hotter or cooler per cubic metre. Your volume in CM is converted to MMBTU before the per-MMBTU slab rate is applied.
GCV (gross calorific value)
The exact conversion factor between CM and MMBTU for your specific meter and gas source, printed on your official bill. It typically sits close to 1,000 BTU per cubic foot, and this calculator uses a standard mid-range GCV, so your official bill's exact figure may differ slightly from the estimate here.

Domestic Gas Tariff Slabs (SNGPL & SSGC)

The rates this calculator uses, current for both companies. Protected status is based on your last four winter months' average usage; it is shown on your bill, not chosen by you each month.

Protected category
Slab (up to)Rate (Rs/MMBTU)
0.25 HM3200
0.5 HM3250
0.6 HM3300
0.9 HM3350
Non-protected category
Slab (up to)Rate (Rs/MMBTU)
0.25 HM3500
0.6 HM3850
1 HM31,250
1.5 HM31,450
2 HM31,900
3 HM33,300
4 HM33,800
Above 4 HM34,200 (flat)

Fixed charge: Rs 600/month (protected) or Rs 1,500–3,000/month (non-protected). Meter rent: Rs 40/month for both. 18% GST applies on top. Rates current as of the OGRA notification effective 1 July 2025; domestic rates have not changed since.

Calculating From a Meter Reading

If you do not know your units, you do not need to. Your gas meter shows a running total in cubic metres. Subtract last month's reading from this month's reading, and the difference is your units consumed. The calculator's meter reading mode does this subtraction automatically, so you can enter the two numbers straight off the meter without doing the maths yourself.

Why This Is an Estimate

This calculator uses the official OGRA domestic slab rates and a standard mid-range GCV, so it lands close to a real bill but is not guaranteed to match it exactly. Your official bill uses the precise GCV of the gas delivered to your meter that month, may include arrears, a late payment surcharge, or a rounding adjustment from a previous bill, and is always the final, payable amount. Use this tool to plan ahead, then check your official SNGPL or SSGC bill for the number to actually pay.

Gas Bill Calculator FAQs

How do I calculate my gas bill?

Find your units from your meter or your last bill, choose protected or non-protected, and enter them above. The calculator converts your units to MMBTU, applies the OGRA slab rates progressively, adds the fixed charge and meter rent, then 18% GST, to reach an estimated total.

What is the gas bill calculation formula in Pakistan?

Gas charges (units converted to MMBTU, billed progressively across OGRA's slabs) plus a fixed monthly charge plus Rs 40 meter rent, with 18% GST applied to that combined total. SNGPL and SSGC both use this same formula for domestic bills.

How is a Sui Northern (SNGPL) gas bill calculated?

The same way as SSGC: your monthly units are converted to MMBTU and billed through the domestic slabs shown above, plus a fixed charge, meter rent, and GST. SNGPL and SSGC bill on identical domestic slabs; only the region they serve differs.

How do I calculate HM3 in a gas bill?

HM3 stands for hundred cubic metres. Divide the cubic metres (CM) shown on your meter by 100 to get HM3. A reading of 60 CM is 0.6 HM3, the unit OGRA's tariff slabs are defined in.

How do I calculate MMBTU in a gas bill?

Your cubic metre reading is converted to MMBTU using your meter's GCV (gross calorific value), a factor close to 1,000 BTU per cubic foot that is printed on your official bill. This calculator uses a standard mid-range GCV for its estimate.

What is GCV on a gas bill?

Gross calorific value, the heat content of the gas actually delivered to your meter that month. It converts your cubic metre reading into MMBTU, the unit gas is priced in, and can shift slightly month to month depending on the gas field supplying your area.

Can I calculate my gas bill from a meter reading?

Yes. Switch the calculator to meter reading mode, enter your previous and current readings, and it subtracts them to get your units consumed, then runs the same slab formula.

What is the difference between protected and non-protected gas rates?

Protected consumers, households whose average usage over the last four winter months stayed at or below 0.9 HM3, are billed at lower slab rates with a Rs 600 fixed charge. Non-protected consumers pay higher slab rates with a Rs 1,500 or Rs 3,000 fixed charge. Your category is printed on your bill.

Is this calculator accurate?

It uses the real OGRA domestic slab rates and formula, so it lands close to your actual bill. It cannot match it exactly because your official bill uses your meter's precise GCV that month and may include arrears or adjustments. Treat the result as a close estimate, and check your official bill for the amount to pay.

Is this the official SNGPL or SSGC calculator?

No. This is an independent estimate built on OGRA's published domestic tariff. For your exact bill, check it online through SNGPL or SSGC directly using your consumer number.
