Why Is My Electricity Bill So High This Month?
A sudden spike in your electricity bill feels wrong, especially when you have not changed your habits. Sometimes there is a legitimate reason. Sometimes it is a billing error. Here are the 8 most common reasons for a high bill in Pakistan, and what to check for each one.
The 8 Reasons
- 1
You crossed a tariff slab boundary
Pakistan's electricity tariff works in slabs. If you used, say, 195 units last month and 205 units this month, you moved from the protected to the unprotected tier. In the unprotected tier, all your units are billed at a higher rate, not just the extra 10. A 10-unit increase in consumption can result in a 30 to 50 percent increase in the bill amount. Check the units consumed on your current bill versus last month.
Check: Compare units consumed this month vs last month - 2
FPA (Fuel Price Adjustment) changed significantly
FPA changes every month and can be either a charge or a credit. If last month's FPA was negative (a credit) and this month it is positive (a charge), your bill increases even with identical consumption. Check the FPA line on your current bill and compare it to last month's FPA amount.
Check: Look at the FPA line on both bills - 3
The meter was estimated last month and corrected this month
If your meter could not be read last month (locked gates, access issues, etc.), the DISCO estimated your consumption based on averages. This month, when the actual reading was taken, the bill includes the real consumption for both months. This is called a catch-up bill and can appear as a sudden doubled amount.
Check: Look for 'Estimated Reading' on last month's bill - 4
A new or faulty appliance is using more power than expected
An AC with a refrigerant gas leak, a water heater thermostat stuck in the on position, an old refrigerator with a failed door seal, or a malfunctioning motor can quietly draw excessive power. Old appliances often develop faults that increase their power consumption without obvious symptoms. Check any appliance that runs continuously or has recently needed repair.
Check: Appliances that run continuously — AC, fridge, geyser - 5
Meter tampering or a faulty meter
Meters can malfunction and over-count. Signs include consumption that makes no sense even after accounting for all your appliances, or readings that jump dramatically with no corresponding usage. You have the right to request a Meter Defect Test (MDT) from your DISCO. If the meter is found faulty, the DISCO must adjust your bill.
Action: Request a Meter Defect Test (MDT) at your circle office - 6
Extra people in the house
If guests stayed, a new family member moved in, or people worked from home more than usual, consumption rises accordingly. Each person using a phone charger, laptop, fan, or lights adds to the total. This is obvious but often overlooked when searching for a mysterious bill increase.
Check: Any changes in household occupancy - 7
Electricity theft or unauthorised use on your connection
In some areas, connections are tapped illegally by others, and the extra consumption appears on the legal account holder's bill. If you are in an area with this problem and your bill has been consistently higher than your usage warrants, report it to your DISCO with a formal complaint. Unauthorised connections on your meter are not your liability once reported.
Action: Report suspected theft to your DISCO sub-division office - 8
A change in tariff rates mid-year
NEPRA revises tariff rates periodically. If a new tariff determination was issued between your last and current bill, your rate per unit may have changed. This can increase the bill even with the same consumption. Check NEPRA's website or the tariff page on this site for the latest rate schedule.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
How do I dispute a high electricity bill?
First, compare the units on the bill to your actual meter reading. If there is a discrepancy, file a written complaint at your DISCO circle office requesting a Meter Defect Test (MDT). Keep copies of all paperwork. If the DISCO doesn't resolve it within 30 days, escalate to NEPRA at 051-9207200 or nepra.org.pk.
Does the billing period length affect my bill?
Yes. Billing periods are supposed to be roughly 30 days but can vary. A 35-day billing period will naturally show higher consumption than a 28-day period. Check the 'Billing Days' or 'Billing Period' field on your bill.
What is the maximum I can be charged on a disputed bill?
You should pay your average historical bill amount while the dispute is being investigated, rather than withholding payment entirely. Withholding full payment can result in disconnection. Pay the non-disputed portion and flag the excess through a formal complaint.
