How to Read Your Electricity Meter in Pakistan

Your electricity meter records how many units (kilowatt-hours) you have consumed. Reading it yourself lets you verify your bill, catch faulty meters early, and track your monthly usage. Pakistan has three types of meters in use today.

Types of Electricity Meters in Pakistan

🔄

Analog (Electromechanical) Dial Meter

The old-style meter with a spinning disc and a row of circular dials. Still common in older properties and rural areas. The disc spins faster when more power is being used.

💡

Digital LCD Meter

A flat-panel digital meter with an LCD display showing the reading in numbers. Most newer residential connections have this type. Easy to read, accurate, and used across all DISCOs.

📡

Smart Meter

A two-way communicating meter that can transmit readings automatically to the DISCO, support ToU billing, and display real-time usage. Rollout in Pakistan is ongoing but not yet widespread for residential consumers.

How to Read an Analog Dial Meter

Analog dial meters have 5 dials. Read them from left to right. Each dial pointer moves in alternate directions.

  1. 1

Find the 5 circular dials in a row

Each dial has numbers 0 through 9 around its face and a pointer (like a clock hand) that shows the current digit.

  2. 2

Read each dial from left to right

Note the number the pointer is pointing to or has most recently passed. If the pointer is between two numbers, read the lower one. Exception: if the pointer is between 9 and 0, read 9.

Tip: When a dial appears to be exactly on a number, check the next dial to the right. If the next dial has not yet passed 0, read the lower number.

  3. 3

    Record the 5-digit number

Write down all five digits left to right. This is your current meter reading in kilowatt-hours (kWh).

  4. 4

    Calculate consumption

Subtract your previous reading from your current reading. The result is your units consumed since the last reading. Compare this to the units shown on your bill.

How to Read a Digital LCD Meter

  1. 1

    Look at the LCD display

The display shows a number in large digits, usually with the unit kWh below or to the side. Some meters cycle through multiple readings — wait for the main consumption reading, which is usually the first one displayed after a 5-second pause.

  2. 2

Note the full number including decimal

Digital meters often show one or two decimal places. For billing purposes, the reading is rounded to the nearest whole number. Write down the integer portion.

  3. 3

    Record and compare

The reading on your digital meter should match (or closely match) the 'Current Reading' field on your electricity bill. If your bill shows a significantly different reading, contact your DISCO.

Signs Your Meter May Be Faulty

A meter running faster than normal will cause inflated bills. Signs include: the disc in an analog meter spinning rapidly when you have turned off almost everything, units consumed per day far exceeding what you actually use based on your appliances, or a sudden spike with no change in household behaviour. Request a Meter Defect Test (MDT) at your DISCO sub-division office if you suspect a problem.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

How often does my meter reader visit?

Meters are supposed to be read monthly. In some areas, especially in rural or difficult-to-access locations, readings may be estimated for 1 to 2 months and then corrected when an actual reading is taken. Check for 'Estimated Reading' on your bill.

Can I take a photo of my meter reading as evidence for a dispute?

Yes. A clear, dated photo of your meter showing the reading is useful evidence if you dispute a billed reading. Take a photo of the meter next to a newspaper or a phone screen showing the date for timestamping.

What is the round disc in my meter?

That is the spinning disc of an electromechanical (analog) meter. It rotates as electricity passes through. A faster spin means more power is being consumed right now. If it is spinning when you have turned everything off at the main switch, investigate for a wiring fault or meter issue.
